Thomas William Matthews, age 67, entered through the gates of Heaven Friday September 8, 2023. Although his death was very unexpected and has left a void in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, we are comforted in the blessed assurance that he is now with his Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Debra A. Matthews; his parents, Don Matthews and Barbara Myers; Nancy Burnik (sister); Tom Matthews (uncle); Catherine "Kitty" Hill (mother-in-law); Jerry Hill (brother-in-law); Dave Dye (brother-in-law); Dee Cross (sister-in-law); David Michael (nephew); and Shailyn (great niece). He is survived by his children, Jason and Adam Matthews, Chris and Joe Hill and Michaelynn Dawn Hanson; Leigh Ann (niece); Gary and Tonya Hill and Cathy and Brian Herbst (brothers and sisters-in-law); and grandchildren, Lance, Bekah, Rachel, Riley, Jacob, Cole, Aiden, Ella and Avery. Betty (a dear friend); and some very precious brothers and sisters in Christ, Rich and Pam, Tom and Candy, Chip and Cindy, Lyn; and his faithful church family at Rocky Mount Baptist Church who have showered him with so much care and love over the last year.
Tom became a born-again follower of Christ and would want his last influence in this world to be reaching people for Christ. So, if you are reading this and do not know Jesus and what He did for you on the cross please ask someone who is a believer. Don't wait. You never know when your time is up.
Funeral services will be conducted at Flora Funeral Chapel, 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 with Rev. J. Larry Holland officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. There will be a gathering at Tom's home after the funeral and graveside services for family and friends. If you feel so inclined to bring finger foods or a dessert you are welcome to do so. There will be catering as well. His family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Friday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
