Charles Rowland (Mike) Hopkins, Jr., 96, of Roanoke, Virginia died at Edgeworth Park in Williamsburg on November 26, 2023. He was born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1927 to Charles Rowland Hopkins, Sr. and Sinah Helen Landry Hopkins.
Mike attended the College of William and Mary from 1944 to 1948, taking more than a year out of his studies to serve in the Army at the end of WW 2. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics. He went to work in the insurance industry as an actuary and eventually moved into sales, recruiting and training. As a general insurance agent, Mike achieved Million Dollar Roundtable honors for eight consecutive years. Mike retired at 64, but he continued to teach continuing education and pre-licensing classes for twenty additional years.
Christian faith was always at the core of everything Mike said and did. He was a proud, active, and energetic member of Grandin Court Baptist Church for more than 45 years, serving as a Deacon and as a Sunday School teacher. He sang in the Sanctuary Choir for years and later moved to the Senior Adult Choir. Mike sat on the committee to search a pastor, and for a minister of music, and he was named the Senior Adult of the Year in 2007.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Charles R. And Sinah L Hopkins, his wife of 68 years, Mildred Allman Hopkins, his son, Charles R. Hopkins, III., and two sisters, Kydie Hopkins Kay and Margaret Hopkins Horner.
He is survived by his son, Edward Allman Hopkins and his wife, Janet Pridgen Hopkins, and two grandsons, Isaac Edward Hopkins and his wife Lina Schneider, and Jeremy Claiborne Hopkins and his wife Robin Fain Hopkins.
A funeral service will be held at Grandin Court Baptist Church on Friday, December 8 at 10:00 AM A private interment will follow.
