Evelyn Cundiff Turner Hutcherson passed away on February 15, 2025 at the age of 95. Evelyn was born on February 17,1929 to the late Frank and Angie Cundiff in Union Hall, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Lee Hutcherson, sisters, Thelma Bradley, Edith Short, and Doris Falls, brothers, Rufus, Calvin and Milton Cundiff, and granddaughter, Brooke Montgomery.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (Jimmy) Montgomery, son, Michael (Jane) Turner, grandchildren, Tony Montgomery (Nicole Currier), Leslie (Jack) Turner, Ryan (Heather) Montgomery, Jason (Kathryn) Turner, Ashley Turner (Vicky James) and Benjamin (Jessica) Turner. Great grandchildren, Morgan (James) Ramey, Callie (Josh) Ropka, Alexanne and Hillary Turner, Cayden, Gavin and Logan Montgomery, Dylan Ferguson, Brittany Caya, Blake Ford, Carson and Karleigh Turner and Jake James, and great-great grandchildren, Clay, Ryland and Maizy Ramey.
Evelyn and her first husband, Allen Turner, were founders of Turner’s Ready Mix in Rocky Mount where Evelyn worked as bookkeeper, secretary, and dispatcher. Later when the children were grown, Evelyn studied to be an LPN and worked as a nurse at Franklin Memorial and Roanoke Memorial Hospitals.
Evelyn’s adult life was spent in both Rocky Mount and Roanoke. She was known for her love of family, friends and her church. She spent many years as a dedicated congregant at Rocky Mount Baptist Church and later a congregant and deacon at Colonial Avenue Baptist Church in Roanoke. Her church home was dear to her heart and a large part of life in her walk with Christ. She loved doing her part to share her faith with others through mission trips, church functions, and especially singing in the church choir. Even during her final months and weeks, she found so much joy and peace listening to and singing hymns.
After Evelyn retired from nursing at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, she continued to volunteer each week. She would help provide assistance to families waiting on their loved ones, deliver flowers and comfort to patients, and help organize the duties of the Candy Stripers. Service to her community was important to her as a former nurse and a testament to her compassion for others
A highlight of Evelyn’s life was her love for Smith Mountain Lake. From the lake’s inception she was part of building one of the first homes on the shoreline. Through the years she kept a home away from home at Smith Mountain Lake. She was the consummate hostess and always eager to entertain guests and share her love of swimming and boating at the lakehouse.
Vero Beach, Florida was her home during the winter months for many years after Oscar retired, but she was always ready to return when spring arrived back in Roanoke. She loved to travel and meet people everywhere she went, and rarely met a stranger whether it was in Hawaii, Bermuda, the Bahamas, New York City, or San Francisco. Her southern hospitality followed her wherever she went.
Evelyn spent 9 years at Pheasant Ridge Assisted living, and her last year with Beverly and Joe Rutter. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Beverly (our Guardian Angel) and Joe for their constant care and love to Evelyn, along with Carilion Hospice.
Evelyn had a family and countless friends in her lifetime that treasured having her in their lives. As lovely as she was, she was also a person who knew what she wanted to accomplish and how to get it done. Any valley in her life was conquered with resilience and prayer, and we should all learn to emulate her unwavering faith in God. She was also known as “Mom” and “Mimi.” Whether she was Evelyn, Mom, or Mimi to you, she left you with beautiful memories, moments, and adventures that will keep your heart full until you see her again.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025 at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, 35 N Main Street, Rocky Mount, Va. The family will receive guests one hour prior at the church. Burial will be private.
