September 19, 1926 - December 13, 2023
After a gallant fight with end-stage renal disease, Dorothy May Young (Holland), 97, entered into God’s presence in the comfort of her home surrounded by her daughters, Dawn and Carol, and her sidekick and granddaughter, Ashleigh Holland, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023. She is the last surviving of the five children born to Willie and Eunice Young of Ferrum, Virginia. The family finds peace in knowing that their loved one is now with the Lord and enjoying a great family reunion with her parents, siblings, two sons, and several grandchildren who preceded her in death. She loved her family and her work. Dorothy’s daily routine was to rise early and prepare for the day by getting dressed, applying her makeup, and putting on her earrings. Should anyone come by and want to go for a ride, she was always ready. With the exception of being an early riser, this tradition continued until the end.
Dorothy accepted Christ at Kitson Memorial Baptist Church and later moved her membership to Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and then to First Baptist Church due to relocating. She was a caring mother and grandmother and was blessed with many friends, young and old, throughout her life.
One of her greatest gifts was cooking. She shared this gift for many years attending to the family of Taylor Morris and later as a cook at Ferrum College, from which she retired. She also worked at Bassett Furniture and Martin Processing, Inc. At some of the churches she attended, she utilized her gift of cooking by serving on the Hospitality Committee. The kitchen was the heart of her home until her health failed. Dorothy’s favorite pastime was porch-sitting and attending family gatherings on holidays.
However, her true passion was nurturing her flower beds and working outdoors in her yard.
Dorothy loved her family dearly, and left to carry on that love and cherish her memory forever are: her children, Eunice, Venita, Calvin Jr., Larry (Sandra Gill), Carol “Dee Dee” Holland, and Dawn Reynolds (Eugene), all of Rocky Mount, VA; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; special niece, Sharon Young; special cousins, Sandra Claytor and Gloria Jean Brown; special friends, Henrietta Gibson, Martha Tuning and Nora Wade; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
