William Isaac Hanks, 96, of Vinton, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 17, 2023, with his family by his side. He was born on July 7, 1927, in Everett, Pa., son of the late Jason and Phoebe Hanks.
He was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Cecile Hanks; daughter, Rosemarie Hanks Hall; granddaughter, Alian Marie Barnett; brothers, Ben, Roy, June, and Eli; sisters, Goldie, Jane, Agnes, and Sis; and sons-in-law, Robert Murray Jr. and Steven Conner.
He served in the western front of World War II. He enjoyed hunting, ice fishing, sitting out in the woods, family gatherings and picnics, visiting family in Pennsylvania and Ohio, and sleigh riding. He received the “George Meany” award from The Boy Scouts and was a part of Troop #18. He was a member of TCU/IAM Union and was a faithful giver to the VFW. He worked for the Nickel Plate Railroad, then Norfolk Western Railway, and retired from Norfolk Southern Railway.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his children, Mary Eller (Danny), Alice Conner, and George Hanks (Jean); grandchildren, Dale Barnett, Betty Jo Butler (Nate), Amanda Brookshier (Derrick), Angela Conner, Stephanie Hartless (Louis), and William Conner (Jessica); step grandchildren, Matthew St.Jacques, Terry St.Jacques, Perry St.Jacques, and Mandi Taylor (Dan); great-grandchildren, Selah and Elijah Butler, and Ethan Hartless; special friend and caregiver, Emma Lou Grisso; and many nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel with Pastor Barry Witt officiating. Burial will follow at Franklin Memorial Park.The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. We will be live-streaming the service for those who cannot attend.
