Luther E. Scott, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering devotion. Born in Ferrum, Virginia, on December 28, 1933, Luther was the second of nine children born to Tan and Ethel Scott, and he possessed a charm that could light up any room. Luther’s warm smile and quick wit touched the lives of all who knew him.
Luther’s life was marked by service and commitment. In 1952, he proudly began his service on the USS Ashland in the United States Navy, where he served on active duty until 1956 and continued as a reservist until 1960. During this time, in 1955, he married the love of his life, Rose Marie Hall. Their 68-year marriage was a testament to enduring love, filled with shared laughter, mutual respect, and an unbreakable bond. Rose’s passing in November 2023 left him without his partner, but their love story remains an inspiration to all who witnessed it.
For 32 years, Luther dedicated himself to his work at Lane Furniture, where his strong work ethic and leadership were admired by colleagues and friends. Yet, it was his role as the patriarch of his family that defined him most. Luther had a gift for making everyone feel valued and cared for. His presence extended beyond his family to his church and community, where he blessed others with kindness and generosity. Whether through a heartfelt conversation, a shared laugh, or a helping hand, Luther left his mark on those around him.
Luther is survived by his daughter, Sharon (David) Ferguson; grandchildren, Shaun (Brooks) Ferguson, Brandi (Tim) Abner, Amanda (Tommy) Jennings, and Christy (Johnny) Ferguson; sister, Lena Padgett; brother, Frank Scott; sisters-in-law, Kathy Wray and Carolyn Buchanan; great-grandchildren, Adyson Jennings, Braelyn Abner, Eliza Ferguson, and David Ferguson; and many special cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends.
A celebration of Luther’s life will be held at Flora Funeral Service in Rocky Mount on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 2 p.m., with the service conducted by Ronald Coleman. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Flora Funeral Service.
Luther was preceded in death by his wife Rose, parents, Tan and Ethel Scott; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Posey and Isabelle Hall; brothers, Earl Scott, Jimmy Scott, Billy J. Scott, Emmett Scott, and John B. Scott; sister, Goldie Scott; and sisters-in-law, Mary Scott, Evelyn (Marvin) Arrington and Betty June (Darrell) Perdue; and brother-in-law David Wray.
Though Luther’s departure leaves a great void in our hearts, we find comfort in knowing he is reunited with his beloved Rose in heaven, watching over us with the same care and devotion he showed in life. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the love he shared, and the memories we cherish.
