Helga Martin

Helga K. Martin, 94, of Wirtz, Virginia joined her husband of 52 years, CW Martin, in heaven, on Tuesday, March 26, 2024.

She was also preceded in death, by her infant son, Danny Lee Martin, and parents Alfred Otto Ulitzsch, and Catherine Zerbe Ulitzsch.

Helga grew up in World War II era Germany, and survived many trials of the War.  As a young woman, she wanted to improve her life, and started working at the Tempelhof Air Force base. During the Korean War, she worked her way up to a waitress in the Mess Hall, where she met CW, and the two fell in love. Helga came home with CW from Germany. Due to her great love for America, she became an American citizen in 2008, and encouraged all to vote.

Early on, Helga worked at the Purtain Mill, and was proud of her quality of work and building long lasting friendships, before becoming a full-time homemaker. She loved to cook, and learned to make the best homemade biscuits, which many people craved. She was a very supportive wife and mother, loving and supporting her children's endeavors. She was also an animal lover, adopting many beloved dogs over the years.

Left to cherish the memories, and many stories, of Helga is her son, Gary Martin and his wife, Jennifer; daughter, Angela Martin and her long time fiancé, Christopher Hunt; grandson, Scott Wood and his wife, Chrissy; great grandchildren, Dustin, Alexis, and Christian Wood.

The family would like to thank Barbara Proctor, a trusted caregiver, for helping Helga in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Angels of Assisi. (https://www.angelsofassisi.org/)

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 29, 2024 at Franklin Memorial Park, with Pastor Jennifer Hickey officiating.
